The U.K. has a history when it comes to stellar girl groups. The lineage speaks for itself – Spice Girls, Little Mix, All Saints, Girls Aloud and now FLO. The band burst onto the scene earlier this year with the insanely catchy “Cardboard Box”, which quickly proved to be the ultimate 2020’s breakup song for Gen Z and millennials alike.
As well as their popular appeal, FLO have already received co-signs from the likes of Missy Elliot and SZA – a testament to the trio’s star quality. It’s refreshing to have a British R&B group back in the mainstream too, something the pop music scene on this side of the pond has been missing. FLO stand above their girl-band contemporaries with their water-tight harmonies, catchy hooks and crisp production, as well as their honest and empowering lyrics.
Speaking to Dazed earlier this year, the band reflected on the value of feeling represented. “It’s important that everyone, especially young black women, have someone they can relate to and someone they see themselves in,” they said. “The experiences we all go through are so universal, and no one should feel alone in that.”
