The final instalment in Dazed x MUBI Cinema Club’s 2024 spring season presents a heist film like you’ve never seen before
Over the last couple of months, Dazed x MUBI Cinema Club’s 2024 spring season has treated fans to screenings of High & Low - John Galliano, Kevin Macdonald’s documentary on the iconic designer’s rise and subsequent fall from grace, and The Last Year of Darkness, Benjamin Mullinkosson’s ode to China’s queer clubbers. All good things must come to an end, though, and later this month the latest season will come to a close with a special preview of The Delinquents – named one of Dazed’s best films of 2023.
Directed by the Argentinian writer-director Rodrigo Moreno, The Delinquents follows a Buenos Aires bank employee named Morán (and played by Daniel Eliás) as he cooks up a scheme to free himself from the monotony of corporate life. In short, this plan involves stealing enough money for a modest retirement, then confessing to the crime and serving prison time while his coworker holds onto the cash.
Things aren’t quite so simple, of course. Soon, a company investigator begins to apply pressure to Morán’s coworker-accomplice, Román (Esteban Bigliardi), who heads to a rural hideaway to stash the cash, only to meet a mysterious woman who will transform his life forever. Suffused with timeless beauty, this is a real cinematic discovery – at turns surreal, funny, romantic, surprising and restorative.
An exploration of freedom that blends playfulness with existential themes, the film premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2023, where it was selected to be screened in the Un Certain Regard section to wide critical acclaim. It is scheduled to be released across the UK on March 22, but you can get in there early with Dazed x MUBI Cinema Club’s March 19 screening at London’s luxurious Garden Cinema.
Tickets for the preview are now on sale here for £10 – including drinks and a complimentary tote bag – with 50 per cent off for Dazed Club members. Find out more here.
