Kiyoko Odo, Janina Zais and Issac Poleon are among the hottest beauty talent of 2020
Today, the British Fashion Council have announced this year’s cohort of young creatives as part of its annual New Wave: Creatives programme.
Since 2018, the BFC has been spotlighting the 50 most innovative and inspiring up-and-coming creative talents from around the world as part of its annual Fashion Awards, this year taking place virtually on December 3. Chosen by a committee of the global fashion and beauty community including Isamaya Ffrench, Aaron Philip, and Charles Jeffrey, this new guard of young creatives will benefit from continuous support from the BFC, through mentorship and advocacy.
Alongside Dazed Beauty favourites and community members including Kai-Isaiah Jamal, Agusta Yr Gudmundsdottir, John Yuyi, and Amber Pinkerton, the list includes trailblazing talent from across the beauty industry. So, without further ado, let us introduce you to the new crop of beauty talent.
KIYOKO ODO
Hairstylist and Dazed 100 alumni Kiyoko Odo has been behind some of your favourite fashion hair looks over the last few years. From matching, supersized pig-tailed wigs, crimped and curled at Junya Watanabe to Bo Peep ringlets for Yuhan Wang at Fashion East, Odo is unafraid to take risks with shape, volume and colour producing fantastical hair creations that oscillate from futuristic minimalism to the mind-bogglingly insane.
CECILE PARAVINA
Cecile Paravina’s off-kilter make-up style has been tapped by everyone from Ninamounah, whose SS20 runway featured Paravina’s coveted butterfly wing lashes you saw everywhere, to publications including AnOther, Interview, Novembre and Dazed China. Often playing with perspective and portions of the face, from distorted eye shapes to elongated to the extreme lashes, Paravina creates looks that are as magical as they are freakish. And when we say freakish, we mean that as the highest compliment we can give.
ISSAC POLEON
From starting in a salon aged 17, Dazed Beauty Community member Issac Poleon has gone on to work with some of the most exciting names in fashion from Mowalola, Gareth Pugh and Fenty to Campbell Addy and Ib Kamara. Black hairstyles are Poleon’s raison d’être and his work inherently celebrates the power and beauty of Black hair whether it’s formed into the stunning updos he creates, the towering hair sculptures, or sleek sexy waves.
JANINA ZAIS
Berlin-based hairstylist and Dazed Beauty Community member Janina Zais proves that buzzcuts can have just as much wow-factor as elaborate, towering coifs. Zais turns heads with her buzzy designs which range from political statements about gender and anarchy to creative and funny. With editorials for Numero and Vogue Germany already under her belt and an exhibition on its way, there are a lot more shaved heads in our future.
GEMMA SMITH EDHOUSE
When Gemma Smith Edhouse does make-up, it’s not to change or conceal but rather to bring out the best of her subjects. It’s make-up that accentuates and celebrates everyone’s unique individual beauty, playing to the strengths of the faces she paints. Think beautiful looking skin, flawless and buttery, with strong, natural brows. It’s a skill that has led her to multiple covers for Dazed as well as Vogue Italia and L'Uomo Vogue, and collaborations with fashion houses including Tom Ford, Fendi and Missoni.
ISSAC YU
Issac Yu is an artist and hair is his medium. Working with brands like Calvin Klein and Nike and magazines including Vogue China and Dazed China, hairstylist Yu constructs elaborate coiffed creations that defy both convention and gravity. Full of strong shapes, towering silhouettes and neon colours, Yu’s work demonstrates the sculptural possibility of hair and proves that there are no limits when it comes to creativity.
PATRICK GLATTHAAR
A sense of fun and freedom from the rules of convention sets make-up artist Patrick Glatthaar’s work apart from the crowd. His eclectic aesthetic is full of childlike joy – and a childlike use of glitter – which makes sense, his biggest source of inspiration is his young nephews. Whether it’s shapes, gems, feathers or, of course, glitter, Glatthaar is unafraid to experiment and work has been featured in Dazed and 032c as well as fashion brands like Alyx, MCM, Hermès, and Gentle Monster.
LATISHA CHONG
Remember Ashton Sanders’s slick finger waves and bowed ponytail at the Met Gala last year? The standout look came courtesy of hairstylist Latisha Chong. After being taken under the wing of Jawara, Chong has worked with some of the most exciting brands and names of the moment. Think Telfar, Area, Raisa Flowers, and Ian Isiah. From sleek ponies to voluminous bouffants and elaborate updos, Chong's talent runs the gamut. Remember the name.
VALENTINA LI
Adamant on being described as a face painter rather than make-up artist, Valentina Li creates playful looks brimming with imagination, colour and a sense of freedom from convention. Having worked with YSL and Vogue China, Li began assisting Erin Parsons on shows including Jean Paul Gaultier and GCDS and recently created an ethereal crystal feather face embellishment and butterfly nails for Chinese singer Bibi Zhou.
KALLE EKLUND
Hairstylist Kalle Eklund’s contemporary, fashion-forward style has made him a natural choice for avant-garde clients including Masses Magazine, Interview Magazine and Numéro Homme as well as brands like Maison Margiela. With one eye always on the bigger picture, Eklund's work uses hair to enhance the characters and moods of the shoots he works on.
