The streetwear designer is heading to the Italian fashion capital for a brand new gig, plus more news you missed this week
Since its launch in 2009, Palace Skateboards has revolutionised the streetwear market with canny pop culture references, off-beat marketing strategies, and a general ability to not take itself too seriously. Now, it seems the approach has paid off, as founder Lev Tanju has just bagged himself a shiny new creative directorship. This week, Fila announced that Tanju would be heading up its Fila+ label, a brand new “elevated” line by the Italian sportswear company. In a statement, Fila’s global brand president Todd Klein celebrated the appointment, saying that the company was “thrilled to welcome Lev,” and that his “forward-thinking approach is aligned with our mission to innovate while honouring Fila’s legacy as a premium sports brand.” Tanju also echoed those sentiments, saying in the same statement that, “Italy stands for all things stylish… and I want Fila’s rich Italian heritage to be at the heart of Fila+.”
By way of honouring this legacy, the Fila+ studio will be based in Milan, with Tanju splitting his time between Italy and London, where he’ll remain creative director of Palace. While he might’ve already had his hands full, we can see why Fila tapped the designer to front their new upmarket offering, after successful collabs with Moschino, Gucci and Polo Ralph Lauren. Opening its own dedicated luxury label also feels like the next obvious step for Fila, which released a Glenn Martens-designed Y/Project collab in 2021, and debuted a Haider Ackermann collection in 2022 as part of a brand refresh. And while Fila+ has already been shown to buyers privately during Paris Fashion Week Men’s, us plebs will have to wait ‘til the official reveal in June before we can see what Tanju has up his sleeve.
In other fashion news this week, the “ludicrously capacious” Burberry bag from Succession’s final season sold at auction for a ludicrous amount; awards season continued with an Emmys red carpet filled with Schiaparelli, Versace and Saint Laurent; Lana Del Rey was struck by Cupid in images from Skims new Valentine’s Day campaign; the ‘Mob Wife aesthetic’ blew-up on TikTok, and Dazed Fashion brought you all the tips on how to achieve its look; plus, we rounded up all the best bits from this past Milan Fashion Week Men’s. VALENTINO GETS A LITTLE SUGA
While we eagerly await Valentino’s AW24 menswear show tomorrow, the Italian house has kept us fed with a brand new campaign starring BTS-alum Suga. The Theo-Wenner lensed images feature clothing from the label’s SS24 ‘Narratives’ show, with the singer lounging in the back of a car while screaming fans bang on the window. It was back in January 2023 that Suga joined Valentino’s roster of ambassadors, whom the company refer to as Di.Vas – apparently an acronym for ‘Different Values’. APPLE PULLS SOME VINTAGE DIOR
Apple TV+ have just dropped the first official trailer for The New Look, a sweeping, 10-part period drama about the work of Christian Dior. Set against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Paris, the show chronicles Dior’s rise to prominence, his bitter rivalry with Coco Chanel, and the role of fashion in rebuilding the war-torn French capital. Premiering on February 14, The New Look stars Ben Mendelsohn as Dior, and Juliette Binoche as Chanel. For the full trailer, click here.
CHANEL AND JAMIE CRUSH IT
Speaking of Chanel, last night Dazed hosted a megaparty to celebrate the French label’s new Coco Crush jewellery campaign. Taking place in the brand new Dazed Space in central London, the party featured a curated DJ line-up by Jamie xx, who also took to the decks for his own electric headline set at the end of the night. Campaign star Lucy Boynton was in attendance, along with Bree Runway, Bimini, Aitch, and Amelia Dimoldenberg. To discover more of the Coco Crush collection, click here.
STUSSY AND OUR LEGACY COSY UP
Californian skaters and Swedish minimalists rejoice – Stussy and Our Legacy have re-upped their ongoing collab for an early spring drop. The capsule collection melds the heritage of both brands, and features a black tote with an embossed yin-yang symbol (see what they did there?), some robust leather stompers, and – the standout piece – a black leather hoodie that also reverses as a shearling coat. Check out the full collection here.
