There are certain designs that, often unwittingly, become enduring emblems of a brand’s history – and for the past 70 years, Gucci’s horsebit loafer has become just that. While the shoe has been reinvented by numerous creative directors over the years, it has always remained an iconic symbol of the Italian fashion house’s heritage and craftsmanship.
First debuting in 1953, the loafer redefined footwear, seamlessly blending sophistication and comfort. Throughout its history, this shoe has transformed into a wardrobe essential, translating Italian craftsmanship. Its distinct design, highlighted by a miniature horse bit and a double ring linked by a bar, swiftly became an emblem of the house, effortlessly bridging its history with contemporary fashion.
To celebrate 70 years of the shoe, Gucci has enlisted Normal People star Paul Mescal and singer and actor Xiao Zhan to star in a brand new campaign, sporting the Horsebit 1953 loafer. Mescal was shot by photographer Heji Shin and styled by Felicity Kay, while Zhan was captured by Feng Li and styled by Chu Xuan. Together their intimate portraits, demonstrate how the timeless design and iconic features remain a source of inspiration and a symbol of style to generations through the ages.
